It is not easy to achieve Band 7-8 in the IELTS speaking test. In order to achieve higher than 6.5 you need to demonstrate that you can use less common vocabulary, including idioms and collocations.
Let’s look at how you can say common sentences in a ‘less common’ way:
Band 6.5: “Korean people think that they are good singers, so they like karaoke.”
Band 7+: “Korean people regard themselves as being talented singers, so they enjoy karaoke.”
Band 6.5: “I was very happy when I got a promotion.”
Band 7+: “I was over the moon when I got my promotion.”
Band 6.5: “If we use energy sources like wind, we can produce less greenhouse gas emissions.”
Band 7+: “If we use energy sources like wind, we can reduce our carbon footprint.”
Band 6.5: “Many people in my country are extremely poor.”
Band 7+: “Many people in my country live below the breadline.”
Band 6.5: “I live in a rich part of the city.”
Band 7+: “I live in an affluent part of the city.”
Band 6.5: “In the end, we arrived in a strange part of town.”
Band 7+: “We ended up in a strange part of town.”

If you are aiming for a high band, you can find lots of useful synonyms to watch and download in Lectures #8-11 of the IELTS Speaking Masterclass course.
