Talking about your hometown in the IELTS Speaking test

In the IELTS Speaking test, questions about your home town or city are very common in Part 1 and also Part 3. Watch this video of native speakers talking about where they live. Pay attention to the language that they use. Below the video, I will present some useful vocabulary that you can use in the IELTS test.

Useful expressions

There were lots of useful words and expressions for IELTS candidates who want to get a high band. Here are some examples:

  • Leeds is where I’m at university right now. (0:28)
  • a 10-minute drive from the university (0:37)
  • The main thing I like about living in Leeds is … (0:50)
  • everything’s at your fingertips (= everything is close, easy to access) (1:14)
  • an idyllic setting (= picturesque, beautiful) (2:18)
  • The best thing about living in the country is … (2:25)
  • I think the main disadvantage is … (2:45)
  • I can’t see myself living in the city again. (3:10)
