Video: whole foods vs. processed foods

IELTS Speaking Part 3: A good example

In this post I’m going to share a video of a ‘possible Band 8-8.5′ candidate answering a question about the role of parents in part 3 of the IELTS Speaking test. This is a good example of a high-band answer because the candidate uses many of the tips and strategies that I discuss in my posts and in my preparation materials. Using synonyms in the IELTS Speaking test

I have written in previous posts that 25% of your score is based on how well you can express yourself using a wide range of words and phrases. If you are aiming for Band 6, you just need to use simple words -- but correctly. If you are aiming for Band 7 or higher, you need to show that you can use some 'less common' vocabulary, including less common synonyms of common words. In this post I'm going to show you an example of this.

Use qualifiers in your speaking

I've often explained to my students and in my materials that one of the differences between people who are good at speaking English and those who sound unnatural is the use of qualifiers. Qualifiers are words and phrases like a bit, a little, rather, quite, extremely, absolutely, almost always, usually, hardly ever, etc. In this post I'm going to show you how we use qualifiers with adjectives.
